When the fire is established, you can also opt to use wet fuel. It will burn slower than fry fuel. Remember that hardwood burn for a longer period of time, and emits more heat compared to softwood.

You should measure out this area on the ground and use this measurement to purchase your shade material (canvas, plastic or tarp). The shade material you buy should measure slightly larger than the covered area in order to provide allowance for hemming.

Hemming the shade material prevents it from fraying and enables the awning to last longer. Fold in each edge of the material about an inch and sew the hem with a straight running stitch. Nylon thread should be used because it too is more durable and resistant to weather conditions than cotton thread. A grommet is to be installed at each corner of the shade material after its edges have been hemmed.

The distance between the grommets on the side of the awning that is to be attached to your house are used to determine where the pilot holes should be drilled before the screw hooks are inserted. Pilot holes are important to stop the wooden siding of your house from splitting and aid accurate insertion of the screws. Use key rings, one through each grommet, to attach them to the screw hooks affixed to the house.

To determine where to situate each tent pole, stretch the shade material out and mark the spots. Tent poles can be fixed to the ground or rest on top of it on flat ends. After the poles have been set up, the shade material is attached by hooking one pole to the grommets on each remaining corner. The remainder that needs to be done when you learn how to build an awning is to tether it. Two sections of nylon rope are tied to each grommet fastened to a pole. One section is pulled to the front and staked to the ground, while the second section is staked to the ground at right angles to the first section of rope.

Workbench 1 How to Build a Workbench


  • Layout – Start by laying out the height, width, and length of the bench. This can vary according to space available. Cut your leg posts from the 4×4″ post stock, allowing 1″ for the bench top. If the bench is going to stay in position, check the levelness of the floor – now is the time to make sure the bench will be stable.
  • Bench Supports – The width of the bench can be anything. Remember, however, that you want a width that you can easily reach across without reaching too close to tool hazards. Also consider that you might be leaning forward and reaching up for a tool on a pegboard. Cut and miter to length 2×4″ stock for the side bench supports. Try to keep these supports between the post legs by countersinking toenail holes into the 2×4″ supports and the post leg. Cut 2×4″ stock to form the bench’s top frame and then cut 45-degree blocking to be placed at the corners of the frame top and legs. Leave the front of the bench open for stock storage.

  • Attach Top – Cut the top length and width to taste. Pre-drill screw holes and screws the top to the frame. Remember that this piece of the bench may be replaced as the bench becomes worn and used.
  • Accessories – One of the good things about a woodwork bench is that you can customize it to your particular working habits or hobby requirements. Drawers are a good example. Since you left space in front of the bench, it will be easy to install custom drawers. If you tend to use drill bits quite a lot, try drilling some holes into the bench top or a piece of strapping within the drawer to create a place to store them.

 How to Build a Toy Box


  • Body – Start with the basics: take six pieces of plywood and cut four of them to 4×2′, and two of them to 2′x2′. Once this is done, use corner molding to secure each corner of two of the larger plywood pieces together. Secure smaller pieces on the opposite side of the corner molding to make a box. Miter the edges and secure the top of each side of the box with countersunk screws. Cut off and sand any excess metal from the inside of the box and then cut two lengths of 1×2″ board. Measure 1′ into the long side of the box from each side and mark this point. Using 3″ wood screws, secure 1×2′ stock to the outside of the plywood at the edge that does not yet have any molding on it. Miter the edges of the flat molding and secure the piece to the bottom of the box in the same manner as the top. Place the third 2×4′ piece of plywood inside the box and screw it to the cross members that support the floor.
  • Lid Frame – Cut and miter the edges of the remaining 1x2s to form a square that is 2×4′. Glue the corners and clamp them in place. Allow them to dry and then use a corner fastener to hold them in place.

  • Attaching the Lid – Mark dots centered left to right on the top of the body of the toy box and the lid frame. Lay the body of the box on its back side. Attach security hinges to the inside of the box. Turn the box upright and place the lid frame on top. Open the hinge and mark the placement of the screws on the frame, then secure the frame to the hinges. Place the remaining piece of 2×4′ plywood on one edge of the lid frame and secure it using 1″ screws countersunk into the wood. Fill the countersunk holes with wood putty and allow them to dry. Sand and smooth the filled-in areas. Finally, paint, stain or decorate to taste.
